JunkYard Dog

JunkYard Dog

Project Overview:

In-house project with the goal of creating and inserting a photoreal 3D creation into a live action environment. Project goals include 3d modeling, texturing, character animation and rendering as well as detail rotoscope matte extraction, 3D camera matchmoving, HDRI spherical image capture and node based compositing of multipass 3d renders.

Videos:

Test Comp: Matchmove and multipass comp

Test Comp: Matchmove and multipass comp

A test comp animation of one of the shots. Camera track in Syntheyes, render in modo, multipass renders composited in eyeon Fusion.

Animation Test: modo animation channels

Animation Test: modo animation channels

This render test utilizes the modo 501 setup of animation sliders that control the tail, neck and jaw animation.

modo 501 user channels

modo 501 user channels

screen capture of modo 501 user channel animation sliders and constraints setup for the tail and the neck and head pieces.

Turntable 4: posed and down view

Turntable 4: posed and down view

Another turntable test, just with a slightly different pose and camera angle. Rendered to study a bit more of the texturing and spherical image map used for global illumination.

Turntable Test 3

Turntable Test 3

A bit of a pose added to the creature in modo. Same lighting setup, render pass setup, and fusion comp setup as turntable #2.

Turntable Test 2

Turntable Test 2

This test consisted of multiple render passes from modo, composited in fusion. A little bit of chromatic abberation, reflection pass, and specularity from the respective passes was added.

Turntable Test 1

Turntable Test 1

A turntable test using one of the HDRI 360 degree environment panoramas for global illumination. The modo render consisted of the final color pass and a shadow pass.

JYD Phase 1: Roto

JYD Phase 1: Roto

Roto of the  foreground for insertion of a CG character to be completed at a later  time (in progress now; using modo 501). This was shot in an auto yard in  Oregon. The roto is all mocha V2. All shots took about a little over 1  week of nights and some time on the weekends to complete the roto.

JYD Phase 2: 3D Matchmoving

JYD Phase 2: 3D Matchmoving

Using the rotomattes and a proxy object of the isolated concept drawing, this video represents the roto and 3D matchmove validation.

HDRI Environments:

Below are some of the 360 degree panoramas that will be used as HDRI global illumination and reflection environment maps for the 3D environment. This will allow for the most accurate representation of the actual scene lighting, as well as reflections on the CG elements that will help marry the elements together.
